These Baby-Friendly Muffins Are a Total Win

Introducing new foods to a baby can be a harrowing experience — especially if it’s your first kid. That’s why I’m a big fan of these healthy little muffins from Amy Palanjian. They’re designed to be more moist than ordinary muffins, which means they’re easier for babies to hold and eat. They’re also the right size for small toddler fingers to pick up and hold, and they’re an easy on-the-go snack that’s relatively tidy to eat. Of course, many toddlers will find a way to make a mess out of them anyway, but at least muffins aren’t sticky.

“I always love a good muffin recipe,” says Amy Palanjian of Yummy Toddler Food. “And this one is loaded with three kinds of produce and a super-tender texture so it’s easy for the littlest eaters to enjoy!”

There’s a reason parents are always assumed to have snacks in their pockets — nobody wants to deal with the rage of a hungry toddler. Little muffins like these are a great thing to carry around in your bag or pockets for any time you need a quick snack. You can also freeze them in bulk so you won’t run out.

The muffins contain apples, bananas, and shredded carrots. There’s no added sugar or sweeteners, but the fruit makes them sweet enough for small palates. To make them a bit sweeter for older kids or adults, you can add some sugar to the recipe, or serve the muffins with a bit of jam or apple butter. The muffins contain milk and butter, but if you want to make them dairy-free you can substitute non-dairy milk and melted coconut oil.
