This Trader Joe’s Staple Freezes Surprisingly Well (and Is the Key to Easy Dinners)
updated about 1 hour agoIf there’s one thing I always keep in my freezer, it’s Trader Joe’s pizza dough. While it comes in the refrigerated section, I find that it’s best to buy fresh and freeze immediately upon unpacking groceries at home. Believe me when I tell you that most weeks there are at least six balls of this plastic-wrapped dough wedged in my small apartment freezer. Pizza on demand!
Although pizza dough isn’t usually expensive, this stuff comes in at less than two dollars per package. And that’s just one reason I love this dough.
In my household, Wednesdays are Trader Joe’s pizza night — but because we always have dough on hand, it could really be every night. This should come as no surprise: I also use Trader Joe’s pizza sauce, a jar of which usually lasts us two pizza nights. Because pretty much anything can be a pizza topping, having the sauce and dough on hand means we’re always well on our way to having an easy, cheap, and filling dinner. On a typical night, you’ll find me whipping up a pepperoni and black olive pizza with lots of melty shredded mozzarella — or something even fancier, like this Buffalo chicken and blue cheese creation below.
There’s just ONE very important thing to keep in mind before preparing your pie: You must let the dough come to room temperature. When I’m not in the mood to order pizza and deal with contact-less delivery, I simply defrost two packs of the dough (just let it sit out on the counter for 30 minutes !) and can make a large cheese and large pepperoni pie on demand.
I also love splitting the dough into smaller portions and making personalized pies for those with certain food preferences. (I’ve made vegetarian pies for friends before and an olive-free pie for my mom.)
If you’re bored with the plain version, Trader Joe’s offers a garlic and herb dough variety that gives a bit more zest to your pizza. I highly recommend rolling and baking that dough into the most perfect breadsticks you’ve ever tasted.
Thanks to its versatility, consistent tastiness, and ease-factor, I will never stop storing Trader Joe’s pizza dough in my freezer. Because who doesn’t want pizza on demand?
