We all know Rice Krispies treats are packed with melty marshmallows, but did you know that some recipes use a jar of Fluff, too? This soft, gooey spread — best known for starring in Fluffernutter sandwiches — has a texture almost identical to melted marshmallows (although it is a bit stickier) and tastes pretty similar, too. Seems like a natural fit for Rice Krispies treats, right?

Once I discovered these types of treats existed, I knew I needed to include one in my Rice Krispies treats recipe showdown — and the best recipe looked to be from TODAY . Not only does their recipe call for an entire jar of Fluff, but it also incorporates two bags of marshmallows. How would it compare to the other recipes? I tried it to find out.

How to Make TODAY’s Ultimate Rice Krispies Treats

You’ll start by greasing a 9×13-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Melt the butter and one bag of marshmallows in a large pot over medium-low heat, stirring constantly. Once melted, add the Fluff, vanilla extract, and salt, and stir until completely melted. Transfer to a large bowl and fold in the cereal and mini marshmallows, or stir everything together in the pot, if it’s large enough.

Transfer the mixture to the prepared dish and firmly press it into the edges of the pan. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit until the treats are set, at least one hour but preferably overnight.

My Honest Review of TODAY’s Ultimate Rice Krispies Treats

Holy marshmallows!! Thanks to the whole jar of Fluff and two bags of marshmallows, these are the stickiest, most marshmallowy Rice Krispies treats I’ve ever tasted — and I’m here for it. It’s the ultimate Rice Krispies treat for serious marshmallow-lovers. They’re thick, glossy, ultra-sticky, sweet, and delicious.

My biggest takeaway here, however, isn’t actually the addition of Fluff — it’s that Rice Krispies treats can handle a lot more marshmallows than we’ve been giving them. Because real-deal marshmallows taste better than Fluff, I actually think this recipe would have been just as good — if not better — with a third bag of marshmallows in place of the Fluff. (Plus, it’d be a lot less messy). So next time I’m looking for extra marshmallowy treats, I’ll simply grab another bag.

If You Make TODAY’s Ultimate Rice Krispies Treats, a Few Tips

  1. Use your largest pot. This recipe gives you the option of mixing the treats together directly in the pot or in a large bowl. Instead of dirtying an extra dish, I recommend grabbing your largest pot — ideally 6-quarts or larger. A stockpot is also a great option.
  2. Use a butter wrapper, wax paper, or parchment paper to press the mixture into the baking dish. Any of these makes easy work of pressing the treats into the pan.
