When we moved into our new house, the previous owners were kind enough to leave (or forget?) a brand-new package of grocery-store brand microfiber cloths beneath the kitchen sink. The label said they were reusable, but after a few weeks and a couple wash cycles, they became incredibly worn and tattered. So I was on the hunt for a new microfiber solution — one that would stand up to both everyday counter wiping and heavier-duty kid and pet messes. My only buying criteria: relatively inexpensive, durable, and effective.

With more than 28,000 five-star reviews, these Amazon Basics Microfiber Cleaning Cloths seemed like a good bet — so I ordered the smallest package in blue, white, and yellow, crossed my fingers, and hoped for the best.

My first observation after opening up the box: Even a 24-pack is a lot of microfiber cloths. All the better reason to be more strategic with your cleaning! I decided to color code the microfiber by cleaning zone: I’m using white for living spaces (the least dirty!), blue for the bathroom (easy to remember!), and yellow for the kitchen. I’m storing the towels in their designated areas for easy cleanup in every area, and my hope is that separating them by color will also prevent cross-contamination.

In my kitchen, I keep the yellow towels folded up in an organizer beneath my sink, and the one currently on duty hangs on my faucet. For a few months now, I’ve been using them to clean tables, dust chair legs, wipe appliances, and more. I have to say, I didn’t know it was possible to love a stack of towels this much.

The ecstatic Amazon reviews totally line up with my experience so far. After my last experience, I really appreciate how absorbent these cloths are: Turns out, it’s super easy to wipe up my son’s apple juice spill paired with my own pinot grigio mess (oops!). I’ve also found that they’re WAY sturdier than more expensive microfiber cloths I’ve used in the past — even after many cycles in the washer . Just as importantly, they don’t leave streaks behind on my quartz counters or stainless appliances.

Most of all, I love that I can wipe away grime without using any other product. The little (micro!) fibers are electrically charged, which helps them pick up gunk and certain bacteria (versus just spreading it all around). I still bring out my all-purpose and specialty cleaners for some messes, but for everyday jobs, these things couldn’t be more convenient. And at 65 cents a pop, you can’t go wrong!
