I’m a sucker for a good breakfast sandwich. Something about that particular combination of carbs, eggs, meat, and cheese just makes a morning feel special. Perhaps it’s because, when I was growing up, my dad used to make us his own signature Dad-McMuffins exclusively on Saturdays. Now that I’m an adult, breakfast sandwiches always taste like the weekend — no matter what day of the week it happens to be in reality.

Of course, there are lots of opinions floating around out there about what components make up the very best ones. A few years ago, one of our taste testers went on a very important quest to settle this debate by trying the options at popular chains. The comments section of this manifesto is VERY spirited, with lots of readers weighing in with their impassioned breakfast sandwich thoughts …

Mason Dixie Biscuit Co. started out as a brick and mortar shop. It was opened in 2014 by Ayeshah Abuelhiga, a Maryland native. Customers were so obsessed with her biscuits that she decided to make a frozen version available at grocery stores nationwide. Years later, her line includes sweet buns and scones, too, all made with simple ingredients. And the brand just launched breakfast sandwiches, which I was able to test out firsthand.

I knew Mason Dixie biscuits were great (you just heat ’em and eat ’em!) so I am not sure why I was so surprised to find that the breakfast sandwiches were off the charts. Nestled between either the classic buttermilk or cheddar biscuit, you’ll find a cylindrical egg and a sausage patty. They sound simple enough, right? Well, let me tell you: these are somehow greater than the sum of their parts.

The sandwiches couldn’t be easier to prepare: Just throw one in the microwave under a damp paper towel for a minute and a half. If you don’t have a microwave, like me, you can heat it in the oven at 375° for a little less than a half hour. It’s not the instant gratification that some people need in the morning, but it did pique my anticipation even more!

The biscuits are buttery and flakey, the sausage patty is flavorful but not greasy, and the egg is perfectly cooked (read: it isn’t rubbery in the slightest). Perhaps most impressive, though, is the back of the box, which lists only ingredients that I can recognize and pronounce. There are no nitrites/nitrates, artificial preservatives, oils, bleach, gums, or artificial flavorings to be found anywhere in these sandwiches.

Find these sandwiches in the freezer aisle at Whole Foods stores nationwide ($3.99 for one and $6.99 for two). You can also purchase them directly on the Mason Dixie Co. website .

What’s your favorite store-bought breakfast sandwich?
