I vividly remember my first encounter with a SodaStream . It was sometime in the mid-aughts at a friend’s party hosted at a very fancy Greenwich Village apartment. There was a tower of cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery , a massive cheese board from Murray’s , and later I found out that the woman who was to become Lady Gaga was also in attendance. But what impressed me most about that party was the host’s SodaStream machine .

Fresh fizzy water? On demand !? At the time, it seemed like pure alchemy. Actually, I was just naive — SodaStreams, in some form or another, have been around since 1903. One of the earliest models was reportedly installed at Buckingham Palace and the SodaStream was being marketed as a money-saving device by mid-century. Those marketing claims still ring true today, especially since you can snag a SodaStream Fizzi at a major discount on Amazon right now !

While I fell in love with SodaStream long ago, I put off buying one until I could justify the cabinet space it would take up. Then, one day, I realized the 12-pack of LaCroix in my pantry was actually taking up more space than a SodaStream would. After an extended facepalm, I quickly ordered a SodaStream Fizzi from Amazon .

I’m very, very glad I did. My trusty Fizzi has more than paid for itself in saved costs on store-bought sparkling water over time. The cost-benefit analysis of investing in a SodaStream really depends on just how much fizzy water or soda you like to drink, but for me, replacing two to three dozen cans of LaCroix per week (OK, yes, I really love fizzy water) with a single SodaStream was totally worth it. It also goes without saying that carbonating your own tap water in reusable bottles with refillable CO2 cartridges is a lot easier on the environment.

Besides being cost-effective and convenient, my favorite thing about my SodaStream is that it’s easy and fun to customize your fizzy water flavors. There are lots of syrups available to transform your water into anything from root beer to kombucha, but you can also just muddle some mint, squeeze in some lime, and top it off with seltzer for a fresh treat. This customizability, and the fact that SodaStream flavors have way less sugar than canned sodas make the Fizzi especially smart for families.

Having sparkling water on-demand is also obviously great for the upcoming warmer months when you might be inspired to toast the sunset with some impromptu wine spritzers or peach sangria , but I’ve also found myself using my SodaStream consistently year-round. During fall, I’ll mix some with apple cider and a tiny bit of honey. During the holidays, a splash of cranberry feels festive. And lately, I’ve been making cocktails with the non-alcoholic spirit Aplós , which has notes of ginger and rosemary that really shine when mixed simply with plain seltzer, a squeeze of lime, and a dash of bitters.

The SodaStream Fizzi is the most affordable SodaStream model and is currently even cheaper . Right out of the box, you get everything you need to get started fizzing, and if you’re worried about replacing CO2 cartridges all the time — don’t be! When you order a new one from Amazon, they’ll include a shipping box and USPS return label so you can just drop your empty cartridge in the mail, and that will earn you a $15 gift card . Or, if you have a Bed Bath & Beyond nearby, you can exchange your empty cartridge for a new one at 50 percent off . Either way, you’ll definitely be saving money over time if you’re a fan of fizzy water!
