Back when my family first moved to Florida, a decade ago, I struggled to get my dishwasher to “work.” When we lived in Georgia, I happily used a popular brand of eco-friendly dishwasher detergent gel with no problems. But when I continued the same habit in Tallahassee, my dishes came out cloudy and wet. I knew it couldn’t be the dishwasher because it was brand-new.

I tried the trick of putting a bowl of vinegar on the top rack to cut the hard water. It did nothing. My options at this point were to live with cloudy glasses (they were pretty bad), wash them by hand with vinegar after they came out of the dishwasher (way too time-consuming, but I did it before entertaining guests), or find another detergent that worked.

I ended up switching to Finish Max Powerball , and I haven’t looked back. My dishes came out of the dishwasher looking clean, and I was happy. I thought I had it all figured out and I was all set.

But then I tried Finish Jet-Dry Rinse Aid for the first time and my dishes got even better . You see, I recently learned that a rinse aid isn’t some gimmicky product that adds some vague cleanliness to your dishes. Lots of people love rinse aid — and this rinse aid, in particular, has a 4.8-star rating (out of five!) on Amazon and more than 32,000 rave reviews. It’s the best-selling rinse aid on the whole site and that was plenty to convince me to give it a try.

A rinse aid breaks the surface tension of the water that clings to dishes so that the water runs off easily. I wanted to put it to the test and see if it made any discernible difference in the appearance of my dishes. One nice surprise, if you didn’t know, is that you don’t have to add rinse aid every time you run the dishwasher. You just fill the compartment and the rinse aid will release a little bit at the right time during each cycle. Then, you just have to refill periodically, when the product gets low.

So how’s it been going? Not only do my dishes truly sparkle now, but they’re also dry when I open the dishwasher door. No extra hand-washing and no having to leave things to sit in the dish rack between dishwasher and cabinets. Looking back, I’m just mad that I wasn’t using this stuff earlier!
