The Single Best Thing Buy at Costco This Month, as Summer Starts to Wind Down

There are no fewer than five Costco locations within driving distance of my home. Such close proximity has fueled my love and devotion to the warehouse store and earned me the honorary title of Kitchn’s Resident Costco Expert. It’s a big role (I’m here for it!) and one of my duties is to share my pick for the best bulk buy every month. This month’s pick is something that I buy on every visit, but find especially crucial this time of year. The best bulk buy for August is a bulk bag of whole coffee beans . Here’s why I think everyone should buy their coffee in bulk this month.

This month is the first time since March 2020 that everyone in my household is going back to our pre-pandemic routines. As we prepare for the return of long commutes and rising early to catch the school bus, my first thought goes to my morning cup of coffee. I need fuel to help everyone arrive on time and in the proper socks and shoes for the day, so back to school and back to work means my morning cuppa needs to be ready when I am. And I cannot risk running out of beans.
Buy NowAugust is also prime iced coffee season. (So hot! So humid!) And because I know I won’t have time to swing by the drive-thru on busy mornings I’ve resolved to make my caffeinated cup at home. This starts with, you guessed it, the beans. I prefer to buy whole beans for their freshness and versatility. When I stock up on whole beans, I can adjust the grind based on how I plan to brew each cup. (We recently tested six different methods for making iced coffee — and while it wasn’t the winner, I remain partial to steeping a big batch of grinds overnight in the fridge for cold brew concentrate .) I can grind the beans in batches for cold brew and, if I have any left when it’s time for hot stuff, I can make a finer batch for drip coffee.
Which bulk coffee should you buy? That’s up to you! Costco carries a surprisingly wide variety of coffee, from the ubiquitous K-Cups to the Kirkland Signature coffees, and small-batch beans. My Costco coffee of choice comes from Charleston Coffee Roasters , but check for regional roasters local to your warehouse. As long as you’re buying it in bulk, you’re doing it right.
