My husband and I usually have no problem polishing off an entire avocado between the two of us — whether it’s on toast, cubed on top of grain bowls, or layered in sandwiches. But every now and then there are instances when I’m dining solo or just making a quick breakfast or lunch for myself and only really need half of an avocado. I then find myself reaching for a reusable bag or scouring my cabinets for a tiny container to accommodate the remaining half.

And it is for exactly those times when a storage gadget designed specifically for halved avocados would be mighty helpful. Which is how we got here — trying out five different methods for storing avocado halves to find the best of the best. Here’s what I learned, and which gadgets are worth buying.

How I Tested the Avocado Storage Gadgets

I used each gadget to store a half of an avocado, of course! I placed them all in the fridge for eight hours, like you would if you used half of one for breakfast, then wanted to save the other half for dinner. I evaluated how easy the gadgets were to use, how well they stored the avocados, and how easy they were to clean.

The ratings : Each method received an overall rating, with 1 being my least favorite and 5 being the best. Like the rest of our showdowns , this one considered the final results, ease, cleanup, and price. Along with the rating, you’ll find more detailed notes below.

But let me start out by saying that all of the gadgets worked well — and I didn’t notice any real difference amongst the models in the freshness of the avocados (i.e., browning) after their stint in the fridge. If you love avocados and often find yourself eating half of one at a time, it’s worth getting any one of these dedicated avocado storers.

Avocado Storage Gadget: Sling

  • Ease of use : 4.5
  • Storage : 5
  • Cleanup : 5
  • Price : 4 ($12.98 for two )
  • Rating : 4.5

To use this gadget , you place the avocado half cut-side down onto the plastic base, then stretch the sling’s strap over the back of the avocado to secure it. Think of it like an avocado seatbelt. I felt like I was smushing the avocado a bit when attaching the sling, but it did a good job keeping the avocado fresh and I liked that the sling’s base was flat, which meant it stored nicely on a fridge shelf. The sling is also top-rack dishwasher safe, which made cleanup easy.

Avocado Storage Gadget: Silicone Lid

  • Ease of use : 4
  • Storage : 5
  • Cleanup : 5
  • Price : 4.5 ($8.99 for this model )
  • Rating : 4.5

To use what is also called an “ Avocado Pod ,” you place the avocado cut-side down on the plastic base and add the lid, snapping it into place. The lid is mostly silicone and stretches to fit over the top of the avocado. I found the lid tough to put on, but once it was secured I liked that the pod protected both the top and bottom of the avocado. Like the other avocado gadgets, it kept the avocado fresh and it’s also dishwasher-safe for easy cleanup.

Avocado Storage Gadget: Silicone Hugger

  • Ease of use : 4
  • Storage : 5
  • Cleanup : 5
  • Price : 4 ($11.99 for two )
  • Rating : 4.5

These silicone huggers came in a set of two: one for larger avocados and the other for smaller. After getting the lip of the hugger around the avocado, it fit really well. Because there’s no base or lid, the avocado didn’t rest flatly, which was a bit awkward. However, it stored the avocado well and was dishwasher-safe, too.

Avocado Storage Gadget: Reusable Food Wrap

  • Ease of use : 5
  • Storage : 5
  • Cleanup : 4
  • Price : 5 (if you already have some) or 4 (if you don’t — $16.99 for a set of three )
  • Rating : 4.5

If you already have a pack of reusable food wraps (like Bee’s Wrap ), then this is a no-brainer storage solution. To use it, you simply place a halved avocado cut-side down and bring the corners of the wrap upwards, pinching them together at the top of the avocado to secure them. If you don’t want to buy a gadget specifically for avocados, a piece of reusable food wrap did a great job at storage and was totally comparable to the dedicated avocado gadgets. However, because wax-coated, reusable wraps aren’t dishwasher-safe, the wrap did require hand-washing (which wasn’t a big deal, but is worth mentioning).

For about $5, this handy keeper does really deliver on its promise. To use it, you place a half avocado cut-side down on the plastic base and add the see-through lid, which clicks into place easily. I liked that the hard-shell case both stored and protected the avocado, so no wayward carton of eggs or jar of hot sauce could accidentally smash into the avocado. It’s also dishwasher-safe for easy cleanup.
