The Single Best Thing to Buy at Costco This September
published NowAs president of Kitchn’s unofficial Costco Fan Club — an honor I hold with the greatest pride and humility — it is my duty to wander the warehouse aisles, scoping out the best deals each month. And out of all the groceries and gadgets Costco carries, I have found the single best thing to buy this month: a bag of Kirkland Signature frozen Italian-style meatballs . Here’s why I think you should bring them home with you.
Find it in stores : Kirkland Signature Italian-Style Meatballs, $16.99 for six pounds
Not every frozen meatball is created equal. Some of the orbs out there are tough, dense, and aggressively over-spiced. Kirkland Signature’s meatballs are meaty, well-seasoned, and a very close match to what Grandma used to make. (In fact, here’s a fun story: Our very own Faith Durand once catered a wedding and the thing that got the most praise was the one thing she didn’t make: the Kirkland Signature Italian-Style Meatballs.) In addition to being delicious, this jumbo bag of meatballs is also wildly practical.
If there’s a better dinner shortcut than frozen meatballs, I’ve yet to find it. Sure, you could make meatballs and freeze them for the future, but if you didn’t have the foresight, frozen meatballs are the next best thing. Meatballs play the starring role in classics like meatball subs , are great served over spaghetti , and taste delicious simmered in a sweet and tangy sauce .
Once you’ve added those to your meal plan, this six-pound bag still has more to offer. You can satisfy your craving for Swedish meatballs without taking a trip to IKEA (you’ll just need frozen meatballs, egg noodles, heavy cream, and a few spices). Step onto the patio for the swan song of summer by grilling skewered meatballs with bell peppers and barbecue sauce. These bite-sized balls of beef are also the perfect size for lunch-box proteins. Skewer them and add a sealed container of dipping sauce to the lunch box for a sandwich-free lunch option to the delight of your young Einstein. And because I haven’t even touched on the sheet pan meals, salads, and saucy dinners made easier with meatballs, maybe we should all go ahead and pick up two bags.
What are you buying from Costco this month? Do you have a recommendation for next month’s bulk buy?
