Before & After: A Dated Kitchen Gets a Total Redo — And Gorgeous New Cabinets

Sometimes, you just need to spruce up a room , or even just a corner; other times, a makeover takes over your entire home.
Take it from Allie Affandy ( @affandyhome.and.om ) and her husband Gabriel, who bought their 1917 house a couple years ago. They knew immediately that while they loved their new home, it was going to take a lot of work.
“The house originally felt small, closed off, dark, and dated. However, it also had great character, charm, and a sense of coziness and warmth,” Allie says. “We loved the fenced-in yard for our dog, the original window seat in the dining room, the cove ceilings, the enclosed front porch, and the hardwood floors. From the moment I stepped foot in the house, I knew it was the one for our family, and I dreamed of opening some walls, bringing in natural light, and creating a functional layout for us.”
Allie wanted to merge her creativity with Gabriel’s focus on functionality, efficiency, and utilitarianism. “We hoped to merge these two perspectives to create something beautiful and functional,” she says. So they worked with a contracting company, Byrum Builders, which did the major construction work, and designer Barb Dock to create the floor plan.
“Our goals for the project were to create a more functional layout on the main floor, to add more natural light, and to create a fun and cozy place where we wanted to spend our time,” Allie says. “We completed the renovation with a baby on the way, and I was preparing to leave my job as an occupational therapist to become a stay-at-home mom. It was important to me that our house have a happy and welcoming atmosphere, as I would be spending a lot of time within those walls.”
Allie and Gabriel wanted a dog shower by the back door for their rescue pit bull and a more open kitchen, dining, and living space for a better hosting flow without an over-the-top open concept space.
Allie says they didn’t want to completely tear out all the walls, though — they wanted to keep some up to respect the character of the home. “It was important to me to keep as many original elements as possible, while also updating and modernizing the space,” Allie says.
Everything in the new space feels classic with a twist: The new cabinets have a Shaker paneled style with a fun teal color, the subway tile has a beautiful textured finish, and the traditional apron-front sink is made of modern stainless steel.
And with a new, more open layout and open shelving around the window, the kitchen feels way bigger and brighter than it did before. It also features a counter for Allie and Gabriel to use for meals, in addition to their dining space.
The renovation took a little more than three months, and Allie and Gabriel got to move in just four days before their first child was born.
“On April 19 we got the OK to move in, and on April 23 our baby girl was born,” Allie said. “It was a close call, but it all worked out in the end!” And now, the kitchen’s a place the whole family can love.
