I first spotted Fiestaware’s bright dishes while casually strolling the houseware section at Macy’s and remember instantly falling in love. I had just moved to New York City on a tight student budget with a plan to stick around for two years, max , so a $200 dinnerware set that would eventually be discarded didn’t exactly fit in with my life plan. Five years later, when it was obvious I wasn’t leaving NYC, I wrapped my chipped old dishes in bubble wrap, dropped them off at the closest Goodwill, and got my shelves ready to welcome the dinnerware set of my dreams.

It’s been over a year since I’ve owned my 12-piece Fiesta set and there’s no better way to describe it other than simply joyful . I sometimes open my cabinet door just to stare at the bright, glossy plates and bowls neatly stacked like an inviting box of crayons, or, as my husband puts it, “a Mexican beach seeking expressionism in ceramic form.”

Extraness aside, the coastal colorways of the plates add a certain flair to even the most hurriedly put-together meals and salads, and when I’m sick and need hot chicken soup to recover, there’s no bowl that makes me feel better.

What’s truly great about the Fiesta dinnerware set, though, is how sturdy and durable the pieces are. Despite being rough-handled and accidentally dropped and slammed against the counter a few times, nothing has chipped, cracked, or discolored yet (just a few faint scratches on the darker, cobalt plates and bowls). And although the pieces are ceramic, they feel remarkably lightweight. Plus they can easily go in the microwave, dishwasher, and apparently the oven, although I haven’t gone that far yet.

Like most tiny apartment dwellers, I have limited cabinet space and room for just one dinnerware set, which suits me just fine. The Fiesta dishes are pulled out daily, as well as for special occasions and even while entertaining. And yes, they hold up solidly on all fronts.

How Dinnerware is Made

While I bought my set at full price, Macy’s is currently running a super sale on Fiesta pieces , which means the 12-piece dinnerware set (originally $200) is marked down to $98.56. That’s a sweet 51 percent discount (!!) on a set that could possibly be a collector’s item in the next decade. Am I mad about it? Umm, yes . I’m angrily drilling in extra floating shelves on the kitchen wall as we speak; my second set should be here any minute now.
