A few summers ago while grocery shopping for a beach trip, my friend picked up a pack of Field Roast Plant-Based Sausages. They were an unassuming addition, but they absolutely made the trip.

I love a grocery item that checks off a lot of boxes, and Field Roast Plant-Based Sausages do just that for me. Served just as easily alongside hash browns for breakfast or grilled vegetables for dinner, these sausages do double duty and then some. Not only have they become a tradition for our annual coastal getaways, but they’re also a staple in my own mostly vegan diet. I now eat them at least once a week.

These plant-based sausages come in three flavors (Smoked Apple Sage, Italian Garlic and Fennel, and Spicy Chipotle), and while I’ve tried them all at this point, I especially love the Smoked Apple Sage variety. I’ve seen them sold in regular grocery stores like Fred Meyer, Whole Foods, Safeway, and Sprouts for $5 or $6.49 for a four-pack, but at Costco they are sold as a 12-link variety pack for $12.99 (that’s noticeably much less per link than at other stores, so I prefer to go the Costco route).

My go-to cooking method is to park myself over a pan and rotate them gently every 30 seconds or so until they are browned on all sides (but not burnt). These are easy to overdo, but the patience pays off by the time they hit the plate. I also sometimes cut them into bite-sized cylinders while they’re still frying. Sure, the serving size listed on the box is one link, but when I’m by myself, I tend to cook them two at a time. (They’re too tasty to not immediately want another!)

If you choose to buy your sausages in bulk and, like me, want to extend their shelf life, you can easily throw these into the freezer instead of the refrigerator. Just defrost them in the fridge like you would with regular meat-based sausage. Trust me: These are about to be come a grocery list staple.

Have you tried a plant-based meat that you love? Let us know in the comments below.
