3 Smart Storage Lessons to Steal from This 320-Square-Foot Octagon House

As the owner of a 320-square-foot tiny home located on Shellmate Island, a private 1.5-acre inland peninsula in Sarasota, Florida, Tim Davidson has learned a few lessons about how to maximize space. “The balance between fitting everything and making sure it feels open can be a challenge,” says Davidson, who rents out his quaint beach home on Airbnb . We took one look at his home and it was instantly clear that he’s figured out how to hit that balance. His tiny, octagon home is practical (filled with everything you could need) but not crowded or cluttered.

1. Put corners to work.
Corners are the most under-utilized spaces in any home, says Davidson, who nestled his kitchen into a nook. He clustered most of his kitchen gear into two corners, which frees up the rest of the space and makes it feel nice and open. Instead of spreading all of your stuff around the countertop, consider grouping things together in a single corner.
2. Hang wall-mounted shelves. (But not too many.)
Instead of installing upper cabinetry throughout the kitchen, Davidson installed corner shelves to hold his everyday essentials. These shelves are home to glassware, plates and bowls, and a caddy full of cooking utensils. (Plus a wire basket for freshly picked mangos, which he gets from his tree right outside!) Open shelving forces you to whittle your collection down to only the things you truly need (or want to look at). Tip: The fewer shelves you add, the more open your space will feel.
3. Add counter space where you can.
Davidson created an eating area by extending the kitchen countertop and tucking two barstools beneath. The extra counter space is a bonus for meal prepping while offering a convenient place to relax and enjoy a meal. Twinkling pendant lights above add plenty of charm.
