Fact: I’ve tried my fair share of coconut water when I’m feeling dehydrated or sluggish, but I’ve found that the added refined sugars and preservatives found in some coconut water brands ultimately just drag me down. Luckily, a little birdie recently introduced me to a new antioxidant-loaded superfood beverage that I’ve been adding into my daily routine: Blue Stripes Cacao Water . Great for pre- or post-workout hydration or a mid-afternoon pick-me-up when I’m craving something refreshing (that’s not loaded with sugar), Blue Stripes quickly became my go-to superfood treat that satisfies that craving.

Blue Stripes Urban Cacao is a new wellness brand and cacao shop that uses this underrated fruit to create innovative superfood snacks and beverages. Its founder, Oded Brenner, previously founded international chocolate company Max Brenner, so it’s fair to say he knows his way around the cacao plant.

I love that Blue Stripes sources its cacao directly from farmers to utilize every aspect of the plant — including the shell, fruit, and beans — in each of its products to make the chocolate industry more sustainable. These snacks and beverages are not just better for you, but they’re also better for the environment. The water, which comes in three yummy flavors (more on that below), is incredibly refreshing and hydrating, which also makes this a smart choice to reach for if you had one too many glasses of wine the night before.

Let’s also get into some cacao water science (and why you should be drinking it every day)! Cacao water is made from the cacao fruit — that’s the fleshy part of the whole cacao that surrounds the beans. This fruity flesh is absolutely loaded with superfood benefits that make cacao water a healthy alternative to plain water for advanced hydration and wellness benefits. Antioxidant-rich, loaded with electrolytes, and a great source of dietary fibers that can help maintain gut health, I’m signing off on cacao water being the new coconut water.

Blue Stripes Cacao Water comes in three flavors: Just Cacao , Cascara & Cinnamon , and Chili, Lime & Cardamom . I tried all three tasty and refreshing flavors, but there’s something about the subtle heat and balance of the Chili, Lime & Cardamom flavor that really got me hooked. It’s equal parts tangy, spicy, and earthy. These waters are also packaged in petite, cacao bean-shaped bottles, which make them a convenient choice for tossing into my beach bag or tote bag for weekend picnics and park hangs.

I’ll be reaching for cacao water instead of coconut water for a healthy and refreshing antioxidant boost whenever I’m feeling sluggish this summer. Move over, coconut water. There’s a new superfood sheriff in town.
