The Sandwich Bread That Kitchn Editors Unanimously Agree On
updated NowIt’s not all that often that Kitchn editors agree, unanimously, 100 percent across the board, on a single grocery item. But that’s just what happened when it came time to talk sandwich bread for our 2021 version of Kitchn Essentials . Literally every single editor on staff nominated Dave’s Killer Bread as their favorite whole grain and white bread. Dave’s Killer Bread is seriously the best thing since, um, sliced bread.

I first discovered Dave’s Killer Bread years ago at a Publix just outside Atlanta, Georgia. We tried many of their breads including Good Seed and 21 Whole Grain & Seeds before trying the White Bread Done Right , which my youngest dubbed “the best bread, ever.” The problem became that Dave’s is a West Coast company and our Southeast grocery stores seemed to run out of stock quickly. So we moved to the West Coast. Just kidding!
For a time, we simply bought two or three loaves at a time, stocking up wherever and whenever we saw it, and kept our new favorite bread in the freezer. Luckily, it’s now more readily available all around the country and I reliably find it during every shopping trip. The white bread is essential for a classic PB&J or Fluffernutter. And the whole grain option is nutty, seedy, and toasts perfectly to stand up to any condiment, cold cut, or sandwich topper you can think of.
Dave’s Killer Bread has a really inspiring story , too, which includes the fact that the founder started out as an ex-con grew the company from a humble farmers market stand to a top-selling organic brand in less than a decade. I love that the bread is made with simple wholesome ingredients, but more importantly that it has a hearty texture while still being tender and light in flavor. It meets the sweet spot of ingredients we feel good about and a taste my kids love.
Both loaves have been part of our Kitchn Essentials list, multiple years running. Kelli Foster had this to say about her favorite: “My favorite is the 21 Whole Grains & Seeds ; it’s the only brand of sliced bread I buy at the grocery store. It has a super-hearty (but still soft-on-the-inside!) texture that I absolutely love, and reminds me of a loaf I’d pick up at a bakery or the farmers market.”
What’s your go-to sandwich bread?
