3 Simple (but Brilliant!) Decorating Lessons to Steal from This Pretty Pastel Kitchen

Ashley Wilson’s two-bedroom Pink Palm Hideaway on the sunny Florida coast is a beach-lover’s dream getaway. Wilson is a full-time blogger who runs At Home with Ashley , where she chronicles her DIY home decor projects. As you might expect, she certainly knows a thing or two about good design. “One of my core beliefs is that almost anyone can afford their dream house, with some elbow grease, creativity, and time,” she says. “Every bit makes a difference, even if it’s not always a huge before and after.” After taking the tour of her 890-square-foot beach bungalow (which is available as a rental on Airbnb !), we found three super-fun decorating lessons everyone can steal. Let’s take a look!

1. Add color with accessories.

One look at Wilson’s coastal getaway and any visitor can tell that happy hues reign supreme — both inside and out! Inspired by a beachy sunset theme, complete with swaying palms, Wilson sticks with pretty pastels, including her retro-looking, turquoise kitchen appliances from Big Chill, soft pink cabinetry (Behr’s Cupcake Pink ), and pink chairs.

As for her advice for incorporating color, she says to start small: “Paint a wall white first — that’s not scary.” Then, she says to play with colorful accessories, like a bright yellow cup or a vibrant rug. Decorating with colorful trinkets and accessories means you won’t have to make a big commitment, and when you finally get tired of the palette, you can simply move the items or put them away.

2. Put your collections on display.

Wilson lets her delightful hobby of collecting take center stage in her beach home, making every ensemble purposeful and its own work of art. Take, for instance, her Instagram-worthy open kitchen shelves (pictured above) filled with her assortment of cookbooks and rainbow collection of melamine dishes and cups from Danish company Rice By Rice .

“Collections are a thrifter’s best friend,” admits Wilson, who also loves finding souvenir travel plates and quaint porcelain Lenox houses for her spice village. “They give you something to search for in each store. Find something you love and surround yourself with it.”

3. Experiment with wallpaper.

Wallpaper is a great way to show off your personality and add color to a room, says Wilson, who lists Milton and King and Anewal as her favorite brands. You can also try DIY peel-and-stick wallpaper as a budget-friendly, low-commitment option.

In the kitchen, Wilson chose this pretty bird wallpaper to pick up her soft palette of blues, pinks, and yellows. By keeping the wallpaper to just one wall, the design serves as a complementary accent without becoming overwhelming.
