Although it may be small, Angelo Licari’s absolute favorite room in his 600-square-foot rental apartment in Toronto, Canada, is the kitchen. “I have fallen in love with the tall ceilings and tons of natural light,” he says of the eclectic home he shares with his boyfriend in the historic Cabbagetown neighborhood. 1. Hang and artfully display your mugs.
Tucked beneath a kitchen cabinet along an otherwise blank wall, Licari hangs his everyday mugs, keeping them within easy reach at all times. If you choose to hang them, select mugs that are special (like the couple’s cute elephant mug!) and that you really want to showcase. Hanging mugs out in the open is also a good opportunity to celebrate your personality or complement your kitchen’s design.
2. Maximize tall ceilings with a handy pot rack.
We’re big fans of using vertical space here at Kitchn. Licari takes full advantage of the apartment’s tall ceilings by hanging his essential pans and utensils from a convenient rack. “I was very happy when I was finally able to hang my kitchen pots from my pot rack,” Licari says, explaining that it allows them to save precious cabinet space for other cooking tools.
3. Utilize a sunny windowsill for plants.
Licari punches up the sunny vibe in his kitchen with a burst of greenery. Perched where there is plenty of sunlight, he maximizes his kitchen windowsill by displaying a two-tiered shelf adorned with potted plants. “The plants in the windows make me smile,” he says.
4. Get creative with your shelving.
Next to the stove area, Licari got creative with a small shelving unit (made of rope and wood) hung from the ceiling. It’s a unique and surprising way to show off the couple’s colorful artwork and collection of books. “We also love creating art and furniture from scratch,” says Licari. The point? Don’t be afraid to try something different.
