As a registered dietitian, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen (or thinking about being in the kitchen). Over the years, I have found some amazingly handy kitchen tools that make my quest for simple, nourishing eating so much easier to fulfill. These tools are not fancy or expensive — no, they’re simple and worth their weight in gold.

Among the sea of kitchen tools out there, these are the ones that hold a special place in my heart and the ones that I use on a daily basis.

1. MEATER Plus

I am all about food safety. And while I know that old-school thermometers can tell me when meat reaches a safe temperature just fine, I hate having to open the hot oven to repeatedly check on whatever it is I’m cooking.

This wireless meat thermometer allows me to keep track of the internal temperature of meat via a phone app! It also helps me know when things are getting close to becoming overcooked and too dry without having to cut into things. And because it relies on Bluetooth technology, I can take a temp reading without coming close to a hot oven or grill.

2. Kitchen Mama Electric Can Opener

I’m a big fan of canned beans and tuna as protein sources. With this can opener , you just hit a button and it does the work of opening the can for you. It also leaves the tops of cans blunt instead of sharp (I’ve definitely cut my finger on a can more than once in the past!).

3. Ninja CREAMi Ice Cream Maker

I use the Ninja Creami Ice Cream Maker more often than I should probably admit! With it, I can make homemade ice cream with far less sugar than the store-bought stuff. I can also use it to whip up an amazing sorbet made with only juice and fruit.

4. Chef’n StemGem Strawberry Huller

I never knew I needed a strawberry huller until I got one . In my pre-huller life, I used to chop the tops off of my strawberries and waste a good part of one of my favorite, fiber-packed fruit.

Now, when I hull a strawberry, I only remove the green part, leaving so much more berry to enjoy! I waste less food as a result, and the hulling process leaves a perfect hole in the middle of the berry (creating the perfect home for almond butter or Nutella).

5. OXO Good Grips Medium Cookie Scoop

I use my cookie scoop for so much more than just cookies. I use to portion out energy balls , meatballs , and baked falafel — all staples in my home.

6. Henckels Hollow Edge Santoku Knife

Of all of the knives I own, I tend to use this one 95 percent of the time when I’m prepping veggies. A Santoku knife minces, dices, and slices incredibly well and the dimples on the blade keep things from sticking to it. If I had to choose one knife for food prep for the rest of time, this would be it!

7. Food Huggers Reusable Citrus Savers

Instead of pre-jarred marinades and sauces, which can be loaded with sodium, I tend to lean on lemons and limes to add flavor. And to store a leftover citrus half, I turn to these handy silicone huggers . I love that, by swapping a disposable bag for one of these, I’m cutting down on my plastic usage!

8. Vibe Tea Dinosaur Infuser

Sipping tea is a great way to get in important antioxidants; I drink at least two cups a day. Instead of buying expensive tea bags, I buy loose-leaf tea and brew it using a tea infuser. This dinosaur one just makes me happy!

9. Alligator Vegetable Chopper

Some weeknights I hate chopping veggies. This chopper cuts prep time dramatically and can help save a ton of effort in the kitchen. To use it, simply place a veggie (a potato! An onion! Half of a zucchini!) and press the blade down. You’ll be left with perfectly chopped veggies that are ready to be added to a salad, thrown into a skillet, or placed on a baking sheet.

What are some of the tools you use every day? Tell us in the comments!
