When you have a tiny kitchen , you come up with clever ways to maximize the space that is available. For interior designer Taniya Nayak, who is one of the hosts on HGTV’s “ Battle on the Beach ,” it’s all about utilizing her sink space to the max.

In an interview with Apartment Therapy, Nayak mentioned that her favorite way to maximize functionality in her kitchen is by adding a workstation over her sink. “There are these amazing sinks out that are workstation sinks — a larger sink in a smaller footprint,” Nayak said. “It has a slider on top with a butcher block where you can chop your vegetables and dump the scraps right into the disposal to the side, or it has a strainer built in, or you can use it as an oyster bar. There are a million different options that you can use the station for.”

And there are a lot of workstation options out there, too. This Ruvati Workstation Ledge , for example, is equipped with a built-in colander, cutting board, and folding rack.

While this Kohler Undermount Single Bowl Kitchen Sink is more expensive, it has three ledges in the basin to fit more accessories (colander, cutting board, two grated racks, wash bin). Plus, it has additional features like a cone-shaped drain for easy cleanup and sound absorption.

The only downside to a workstation sink: you have to install an entirely new sink with these built-in features, so this isn’t a renter-friendly option. However, there are other clever storage hacks for renters, like this drying rack that sits over your sink , or even cutting boards large enough to span your sink.

If you’re able, give a workstation sink a whirl! Who knows, with newfound prep space, you could be whipping up new meals you never dreamed you could make.
