9 Valentine’s Day Gifts We Heart from Black-Owned Businesses
published NowValentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about roses and chocolates (as delightful as they are). This year, you can get a little more creative with gifts for your loved ones while also supporting one of the many great Black-owned companies that are creating some really tasty treats and cool, food-themed products. In doing so, you’ll support small businesses, empower communities, and help contribute to closing the wide racial wealth gap that exists in America. And don’t forget — February is Black History Month, too, so it’s the perfect time to patronize a brand that might be new to you. Our team put together a list of some of our favorite food-related Valentine’s Day gifts from Black-owned businesses, including some you’ll probably want to order for yourself, even long after February 14th has passed.
Golde is a forward-thinking brand that offers all types of delicious superfoods and plant-based beauty products that support well being. We're particular fans of their turmeric latte powders, which offer a host of benefits ranging from supporting gut health to balancing stress. This kit includes all three of their turmeric latte blends (original, cacao, and matcha) and is available for pre-order with estimated shipping starting next week. If you don't want to risk receiving it late, there are plenty of other great items in stock and ready to ship now, like their matcha lovers kit .
BLK & Bold offers a selection of highly rated coffees blended from Fair Trade-Certified beans. Plus, they're a certified B-corporation, donating five percent of their profits to organizations that support at-risk youth, such as No Kid Hungry and City Growers . Like all foods, coffee somehow tastes even better when you know it's been produced in good conscience.
We're drunk in love with this rosé from Maison Noir, an Oregon-based winery founded by sommelier André Hueston. It has notes of strawberry and raspberry with a slightly tart kiss of kiwi (yum!). You can even order it from Drizly for delivery in less than an hour — so if you're scrambling for a last-minute gift, you're welcome.
Creating a custom tea blend for someone you love is pretty gosh darn romantic. Soul Tea Blends on Etsy lets you do just that by selecting up to six herbs for a special blend, and they'll even include a custom label with a message of your choice.
Houston-based The Trini Gee offers products "infused with melanin and culture," including this handmade apron that would be a perfect gift for any enthusiastic chef. Its lightweight design makes it ideal for everyday wear or warm-weather cookouts.
If you're planning on making breakfast for a loved one on Valentine's Day, consider this pancake and waffle mix from Vicky Cakes . It's vegan friendly and produces light, fluffy pancakes and waffles that brown beautifully.
Don't forget the card! This whimsical one features a Chicago dog print by artist Leah Birhanu and would be a special addition to any gift you give. It's blank inside so you can write your own message, but if you're out of ideas I recommend "Let's be frank: I love you." (Again, you're welcome.) Leah's Etsy shop also features lots of other beautiful food-themed cards to choose from.
These candles from Belna Candle Company come in delicious scents like Grapefruit Dream, Tomato Leaf, and Black Currant Absinthe. For $50, you get a set of five, with whichever scents you'd like from the extensive selection. They're hand-poured in Raleigh, North Carolina, and burn for over 30 hours.
Ivy's Tea Co. offers a variety of creative tea blends, but their Blow Tea is particularly special. In addition to lemongrass and jasmine, it also contains butterfly pea flowers, which change the tea's color from a deep blue to vibrant purple when you add a squeeze of lemon or a spoonful of honey.
