Why fuss over a football-shaped cheese ball or a giant snack stadium when pigs in a blanket are the most perfect snack there is? I’ll admit that I, too, have neglected the pigs in recent years, opting instead for homemade soft pretzel bites or a fancy-looking cheese board. But I was reminded of their greatness this week when I came across Chrissy Teigen’s recipe, and I will never stray again.

How to Make Chrissy’s Pigs in a Blanket
The brilliance of Chrissy’s recipe is, of course, the addition of everything bagel seasoning, which adds salty-garlicky goodness to everything it touches. She provides a recipe for making your own, but also grants permission to use store-bought — and if you don’t have a bottle of Trader Joes’ Everything But the Bagel Seasoning Blend on hand, where have you been the last five years?
You’ll begin by unrolling a can of crescent roll dough and evenly spreading Dijon mustard on top. Cut the dough along the perforated lines, then cut each piece in half to form two triangles (you should have 16 triangles total). Place a mini sausage or cocktail weinie (Chrissy recommends Hillshire Farm Lit’l Smokies ) at the wide end of each triangle and roll them up. Press one side into the seasoning blend then arrange on a baking sheet. Bake at 375°F until golden-brown, then serve with more mustard for dipping.
My Honest Review of Chrissy’s Pigs in a Blanket
Chrissy describes this recipe as “pigs in a blanket, but make it fashion,” and that’s exactly what’s happening here. The everything bagel seasoning is of course the star, packing in so much toasty, savory flavor and a crispy-crunchy finish. But the addition of Dijon is just as brilliant — it provides a subtle tang and keeps the pastry from tasting at all dry. And can we also just talk about how cute they are? When they emerged from the oven all puffed and golden and cozy, I immediately fell in love.
Now, before I get any further: If you know me and are wondering how a vegetarian could possibly be waxing poetic about pigs in a blanket, let me tell you that I made mine with halved Simple Truth Plant-Based Meatless Chorizo Sausages and do not in any way feel like it was an inferior experience. In fact, having spent my childhood eating pigs in a blanket every year on New Year’s Eve, I can tell you that my plant-based version tastes nearly identical, if not better. Oh, and the meaty weenies were still taste-tested by my mom, who gave them an 11/10.
If You Make Chrissy’s Pigs in a Blanket, a Few Tips
- Spray the wrapped pigs with cooking spray. A quick spritz of olive oil or canola oil spray helps the seasoning stick to the dough.
- Bake on parchment paper. Between the flying seeds and hot dog grease, these can get a bit messy. Parchment paper will save you from extra cleanup.
- Bake for the full 12 minutes. Chrissy recommends 9 to 12 minutes, but they need the full 12 to get nice and golden-brown.
- Serve warm . There’s simply no comparison between a fresh-from-the-oven pig and a room-temperature one. You’ll want to gobble these up while they’re still warm.
