The 9 Tools Kitchn Editors Rely on for Making Perfectly Cooked Rice
published NowI used to be horrible at making rice. Every attempt resulted in a batch that was scorched on the bottom or far too mushy — or somehow both? And then I got my rice cooker . It’s been life-changing , producing perfectly cooked rice every time with virtually no work on my part.
Turns out, I’m not the only one who has struggled. I’ve been hearing from lots of people that they also have a hard time making the perfect pot of rice. And so I polled my fellow Kitchn editors. I was curious to learn what pots, pans, and appliances they rely on when it comes to making rice. Their answers were, of course, indicative of their preferred rice cooking method (stovetop, oven, rice cooker, multi-cooker). Here’s what they had to say.
"We use the Japanese Zojirushi that my husband got years ago. My family has always used a rice cooker of some kind, whether a simple push-button one or this Japanese one. It just always makes perfect rice that stays warm forever! I even had a small microwave one in college that I used for making rice rather than doing it on the stove. "My secret weapon for cooking rice — especially brown rice — is to use the oven, not the stovetop. I use a vintage Pyrex casserole dish with a glass lid, which holds the heat of the oven and traps the liquid, resulting in perfectly cooked rice every single time.
