Homemade Uncrustables Are an Easy-but-Special Lunch-Box Treat
published about 1 hour agoEven kid-food expert Amy Palanjian of Yummy Toddler Food can’t always explain the intricate web of children’s food preferences — especially when it comes to shapes. “I am not sure why my kids find a sandwich cut in the shape of a circle to be so much more fun than a regular one, but they do,” she says — and thankfully, she adds, her homemade version of Smuckers’ packaged Uncrustables are so easy to make.
To make the Uncrustables, you just need your bread of choice and whatever fillings you want. Typically they are made with peanut butter and jelly, but making your own means you can cater to allergies with sunflower seed butter or do something totally different with cream cheese. Finally you can make them with a sandwich sealer or just with a fork and a round cookie cutter.
Buy NowTo make it with the sandwich sealer, you just start by cutting the rounds with the outer part, then add your fillings, and press with the smaller insert. Without one, you can cut the rounds of breads into circles using the cookie cutter, add the fillings in the center, and then seal by crimping the edges of the bread together with a fork, like you would the edge of a pie crust.
The post itself has tons of tips on additional fillings, warming the bread, and how to freeze them — so make sure to read it through if you want to give it a try.
